join me on my learning-to-code adventure
i started teaching myself how to code on 12/12/24
i'm a musician by day, but i think it's fun to prove that anyone can learn basic coding!
and i am super interested in making the internet fun again, and divesting my time, attention, and energy from social media platforms, at least partially, in favor of a smaller, grass-roots-feeling web. i totally love all the neocities sites i've found, and i wanted to have my own.

- technically i figured this out a few days ago, but i learned how to dither things/what that is
- made some gifs in photoshop--i was inspired by cinni's page
- i got custom fonts on here finally

- change font size
- a goal i have is to get some custom font in here but... it's proving finnicky
- rel attribute explains the relation between the current document and the linked document; only used with href attribute
- later styles replace conflicting styles that appear earlier in the stylesheet--this is the cascade rule.
- however, a class is rated as being more specific, as in having more specificity than the element , so it cancels the other conflicting style declaration. in this case, the class styling would overwrite the element styling, even if it's located earlier in the document.
- CSS has two main components: properties (like color, font-family, font-weight) and values (purple, bold, arial), which affect the properties a declaration block contains color: black and font-family: arial, etc
- properties and values are case INsensitive
- i learned how to add a background image to a page, but i am not yet using this because... it makes the text unreadable ha
- lots of CSS properties are shorthand properties, like padding, background, and font... you can do all the specifications on one line for these in a particular order as opposed to making padding-top, padding-right, padding-bottom, padding-left, etc... improving workflow
- however, a warning: one less obvious aspect of using CSS shorthand is how omitted values reset. A value not specified in CSS shorthand reverts to its initial value. This means an omission in CSS shorthand can override previously set values.
- leaving comments in your code is really nice practice so you can remember how the code works, and it's easier to make adjustments
- In CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), em is a unit of measurement which indicates size relative to the size of the font. 1em means "equal to the current font size"
- span are used for inline and div is for block level
- kind of understanding the flex display situation with CSS, you can see i adjusted the layout of "things i like" and "things i dislike" using divs and flex display
- also i want things to display in the center of the page/have more control over layout so badly but that's also proving to be a later step of CSS

i started css :3
- I am unable to link my .css file to the .html file. Oh well! *clown emoji* maybe i will figure it out, for now it's all pasted into the style area of the head
- *note: i figured it out about an hour later...i deleted some important information in the top of the doc hahaha so i fixed it and now my .ccs sheet is linked!
- CSS uses element selectors to target and style elemts, which makes it super intuitive to understand. At least for now, until i want to do more complicated things ;;
- you can attach class attributes to elememts; like li.special or span.special, but usually it's more convenient to simply target the class, so .special

note-taking to help me remember
- HTML is basically used for organizing text in different ways, while CSS is used to make it all look pretty and delightful
- the head of an HTML document doesn't actually display on the page, but it contains the page title and links to CSS stylings
- the body of the HTML doc is where all the words live and you can organize them with things like p and h1 and h2 to style them (but your headings should always descend in order; h2 should always be a subcategory of h1)
- any CSS stuff goes into the head of the HTML doc
- learned br breaks lines, but maybe use it sparingly
- i learned how to create hyperlinks
- using presentational elements like i and b are not as effective and shouldn't replace things like em and strong because of semantics/SEO/accessibility
- how to embed gifs/images, and how to embed links into images! (see below)
